This Week on Georgia Traveler

This week on Georgia Traveler, it's the Best of Season 2! Georgia Traveler 213 airs Friday, September 25 at 9 PM and Wednesday, September 30 at 7:30 PM on GPB.


Also this week, we take trip down Corridor Z with Episode 212 on Monday, September 28 at 4 AM, and we'll be driving the Wiregrass Highway with Episode 205 on Wednesday, September 30 at 7 PM on GPB.

The National Parks: America's Best Idea - A Day of Service and Celebration
Saturday, September 26, 2009
Fort Pulaski National Monument, Savannah
Enjoy an entrance fee-free day at America's National Parks and Monuments in celebration of Ken Burns's new film, The National Parks: America's Best Idea. Visitors to America's 391 National Parks will enjoy free admission and a special screening of the new film, set to premiere on PBS and Georgia Public Broadcasting, Sunday, September 27. In addition to the film, visitors to Savannah's Fort Pulaski National Monument will see musket and cannon firing demonstrations, as well as special programs just for the kids. Go Bananas with Curious George and Doc Neil "The Banana Peel"

Visit GPB's headquarters in Atlanta this Saturday and Go Bananas with Curious George and Doc Neil "The Banana Peel." This kid-friendly event will feature episodes of "Dinosaur Train," as well as a chance to meet Curious George and Doc Neil from "What in a Doctor's Bag" in person! Lyerly Down Home Day

This Weekend in Georgia

It's starting to feel a bit more like Fall in Georgia, although the air is rather damp rather than crisp! But don't let rainy weather ruin your weekend. Here are some ideas for things to do!

Jekyll Island Shrimp & Grits: The Wild Georgia Shrimp Festival
September 18-20 in the Jekyll Island Historic District
Organizers tell us that this festival celebrates coastal cooking and southern hospitality. Since its inaugural year in 2006, the event has brought attention and public awareness to the unique sweet taste of Wild Georgia Shrimp. Highlights of the festival include the amateur and professional cooking competitions, shrimp boat excursions, shrimp eating contests, cookbook signings, cooking demonstrations and much more. Barnesville Buggy Days
September 18-20 in Downtown Barnesville
Buggy Days celebrates Barnesville's heritage as the Buggy Capital of the South during the late 1800's. They have been awarded the distinction of being a Top 20 event in the Southeast for five out of eight years, often featured in major publications such as "Southern Living" magazine. Buggy Days includes food, arts & crafts, a parade and a concert and street dance. For more information, check the website or call 770-358-5884.

Agrirama Clogging Hoedown
Saturday, September 19 at the Agrirama in Tifton
Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Clogging Hoedown this event is scheduled from 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm at the Agrirama in Tifton. Organizers tell us it's the largest clogging event in South Georgia and will be the best and largest clogging hoedown in 25 years. Cloggers from Georgia, Alabama, & Florida will perform on the Wiregrass Opry Stage. For more information, check out the Agrirama website or Call 229-386-3406. This Weekend in Georgia!

As most folks are drawing a 4-day workweek to a close, you might be thinking about what to do this weekend. Well, here are a few ideas... looks like a good weekend to check out a festival!

Oktoberfest in Helen
September 10-12, 17-20, 24-17 and additional dates in October and November
Oktoberfest kicks off in Alpine Helen this weekend! Beer, brats, bands and Liederhosen - the Helen Oktoberfest has them all. Join the longest running Oktoberfest in the United States, which runs from mid-September through the first weekend in November. Every year the heart of hte event is the Helen Festhalle where German-style bands from around the country and around the world play for your listening and viewing pleasure. See the Alphorns blown, the Cowbells rung and the Accordion squeezed. Grab your partner and take a spin on the dance floor to the timeless tunes of the Polka. 41st Annual Yellow Daisy Festival at Stone Mountain Park in Stone Mountain
September 10-13
More than 500 artists and crafters from 38 States and two countries display their works for your appreciation and purchase at Stone Mountain Park. Organizers tell us that the festival schedule includes daily live entertainment, Children's Corner activities, clogging and crafter demonstrations throughout the event as well as fabulous festival foods. Vehicle entry to Stone Mountain Park is $10.00 for a one-day permit during the festival or $35.00 for an annual parking pass. No coolers or pets can be brought inside the festival. Experience Coastal Georgia Festival at Crooked River State Park in St. Mary's
September 12 from 9am-4pm
Experience what Georgia coastal living has to offer this Saturday at Crooked River State Park in beautiful St. Mary's. This weekend's festivities mark the 3rd annual festival and include live animal shows, photo contest and intro to photography class, bird and nature hikes, crafts, games, gardening class, food and more. $5 parking. This Weekend in Georgia

It's Labor Day Weekend, and here some some exciting things going on This Weekend in Georgia!

Pep Boys Auto 500
Sunday, September 6, 2009, 7:30 PM
Atlanta Motor Speedway, Hampton, GA

Atlanta Motor Speedway will play host to the Labor Day weekend Pep Boys Auto 500 in what will also be the historic track's first NASCAR Sprint Cup night race. Expect a heated competition, as NASCAR's top drivers compete for late-season points before entering the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Atlanta Motor Speedway offers more than 870 acres of free parking for fans while attending events at the track. Kingsland Catfish Festival
Saturday, September 5 - Monday, September 7, 2009 Kingsland, Georgia
Head down to Kingsland, Georgia on the coast for the annual Catfish Festival this Saturday through Monday. This three-day event is one of the largest festivals in southeast Georgia, with a parade, arts and crafts, free concerts, and crispy southern-fried catfish. Here's their website! Swim the Warm Springs
Saturday, September 5 - Monday, September 7, 2009 Roosevelt's Little White House Historic Site, Warm Springs, Georgia
Saturday through Monday from 10 AM to 4 PM, the Little White House in Warm Springs is offering a chance to swim in the historic pools built by President Franklin Roosevelt as a place for therapy. Normally kept empty for presevation, the shallow pools will be filled with naturally warm spring water for this very special event. Don't miss this chance to swim the warm springs! This Week: Georgia Foothills Journey, Old Dixie Highway, Roaming the Atlanta Highway

Georgia Foothills Journey
On this week's episode of Georgia Traveler, we we’re on a "Georgia Foothills Journey", exploring U.S. Interstate 575 from Jasper to Cartersville. Phil goes on a getaway to the Woodbridge Inn Restaurant and Lodge in Jasper while Keely discovers the local legend of the Tate House. Two Brothers Barbeque in Ball Ground serves up some fine food for Phil and David experiences family fun at the Archeology Day and Iron Pour at Red Top Mountain State Park. Keely and Phil enjoy all kinds of water sports at Lake Allatoona, with some help from a new friend at Paradise Boat Rental at Park Marina.

Old Dixie Highway
On this week’s episode of Georgia Traveler, we explore U.S. 41 from Macon to Cordele. The nation's first planned highway, U.S. 41 is often referred to as the "Old Dixie Highway". The team gets great travel advice at the Visitors Information Center in Macon and David sets off for fried green tomatoes at the Whistle Stop CafĂ© in Juliette. Phil celebrates the state fruit at the Peach Festival in Fort Valley while Keely shoots skeet on her getaway to Henderson Village in Perry. Everyone joins in the outdoor activity of golfing at Lake Blackshear in Cordele and David dives into the local legend of the Grit Festival in Warwick.

David explores the local legend of lost Confederate gold and experiences a great getaway at the Fitzpatrick Hotel, both in Washington.
