This Week: Ghost Tour of Georgia premieres in HD!

This week Georgia Traveler embarks on a Ghost Tour of Georgia. From Civil War apparitions to paranormal peach state pirates, it’s our scariest episode yet!

This Weekend in Georgia

Annual Old Fort Jackson Auction and Low Country Boil
Saturday, August 29, 2009, 5:00 - 8:00 PM
Savannah, Georgia

Bring the whole family to Georgia’s oldest brick fort for a silent auction featuring an awesome variety of items, savory low country boil, mouth-watering barbecue, fun games and activities for the kids. Stick around for cannon firings and fireworks to end the celebration. All proceeds from this event support operations, preservation, and educational programming at Old Fort Jackson National Historic Landmark, so come and give history a helping hand! Festival of Arts

Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds, Hiawassee, Georgia

Beautiful north Georgia comes alive with fine art and handmade crafts at the first annual Festival of Arts at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds. Shady hardwoods protect guests from harsh summer sun and balmy breezes waft off the crystal waters of Lake Chatuge. The fairgrounds offer ample parking, RV camping facilities, and a rhododendron and nature garden with trails overlooking the lake and the mountains. The Pioneer Village includes a one-room schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, sawmill, and a smokehouse. Admission is $5. For more information, visit the Festival of Arts website.


Tools and Skills that Built a Colony

Wormsloe State Historic Site, Savannah, Georgia

Visit Wormsloe, the Colonial home of Noble Jones, an early Georgia settler, and learn about the crafts of the American Colonial period. Woodworking, blacksmithing, candle making, spinning, dying, and cooking will all be demonstrated. Step back in time and relive the part of the history of the European settlement of Georgia. This Week: Old Dixie Highway and Coasting Along the Atlantic

On this week’s episode of Georgia Traveler, we explore U.S. 41 from Macon to Cordele. The nation’s first planned highway, U.S. 41 is often referred to as the “Old Dixie Highway”. The team gets great travel advice at the Visitors Information Center in Macon and David sets off for fried green tomatoes at the Whistle Stop CafĂ© in Juliette. Phil celebrates the state fruit at the Peach Festival in Fort Valley while Keely shoots skeet on her getaway to Henderson Village in Perry. Everyone joins in the outdoor activity of golfing at Lake Blackshear in Cordele and David dives into the local legend of the Grit in Warwick.

This Weekend in Georgia!

This is the last full weekend in July, so, get out there and enjoy summer! If you're looking for some ideas, we've got some:

Rescuing a Piece of Romantic History
at the Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site in Dahlonega

Sweetheart jewelry, mementos from the Civil War given from soldiers to their loved ones, will be on display at the Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site in Dahlonega. That's in northeast Georgia. Florida State University Flying High Circus
at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain

Every Summer since 1960, the Florida State University "Flying High" Circus has been in residence at Callaway Gardens. The Circus is composed of talented college students who train and perform in the Circus as an extracurricular activity. The top students in the Circus are invited to Summer Adventure each year to perform and to serve as camp counselors. Their daring acrobatic acts keep audiences on the edge of their seats: trapeze acts, juggling routines, balancing acts, tightwire walks and more. ArtSquared Savannah will be a weekend celebration of the arts in Savannah. On Friday evening, City Market will come alive as the Art & Soul of Savannah. The countless galleries will stay open into the evening while you take pleasure in the sights, sounds and tastes of City Market. On Saturday, guests can enjoy a Palette to Palate Gallery Hop throughout the Historic District. At each gallery sample Southern delicacies and wines while enjoying the sounds of jazz and classical music by local musicians. On Sunday, you will be treated to a Gospel Brunch at the Jepson Center featuring Mt. Zion Baptist Church "Voices of Praise." This Weekend in Georgia!

It's the second weekend in July, so, we hope you're out there enjoying the great State of Georgia and all it has to offer! If you're looking for some ideas, we've got some:

The folks at Red Top Mountain State Park in Cartersville invite you to a night time hike they call "Party with the 'Possums". Suitable for all ages, you can learn about the opossum, our local marsupials, and other creatures active at night in the Georgia forest. The hike leaves from the Visitors Center around 8 PM tonight- July 10. Bring your own flashlight and wear sturdy shoes. For more information, visit the Red Top Mountain State Park website or call 770-975-4226. If you miss the July 10 hike, similar events take place on Friday, July 17 and Friday, July 24.

At the Cannonball House in Macon, you can learn all about the "Art of Food Preservation" this Saturday, July 11 from 11AM until 4 PM. You can see historians dressed in period-style clothing in the original brick Cannonball House kitchen as they prepare summer's harvest for the winter. Learn about 19th century food preservation techniques as a part of the "Art of 19th Century Living" series of events. which explore life and customs of the mid-1800's. And down on the coast, it may not be a strictly weekend activity, but if you're in Savannah, you should plan to take in a "Mercer in the Squares" concert. A part of the centennial celebration of Savannah native Johnny Mercer, this concert series will present some of the area's most talented musicians performing Mercer favorites in Johnson and Wright Squares. One concert is today, July 10 from 11:30-1:30PM. If you missed that one, don't worry, you'll have an opportunity to enjoy the performances on Wednesdays and Fridays all month long! This Weekend in Georgia

Georgia Traveler invites you to take some time off from tax preparation and enjoy a few Easter Weekend events happening around the state!

On Saturday, April 11, hop on over to Red Top Mountain State Park in Cartersville for their Easter Celebration. Kids can have their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny, and participate in other games and activities, including the requisite Easter Egg hunt! The event runs from 9:30 AM to 12 PM, and breakfast is available from the nearby Mountain Cove Restaurant. There is a small fee for participation and parking. Easters in the South are famous for good eats, so if you're in the Savannah area April 10, 11, 0r 12, join up with the Paula Deen Tour. Paula's cooking and down home charm have made her famous in Georgia and beyond, and you can hear her story, as well as get some great food! The tour through Savannah's Historic District also includes a buffet lunch at Uncle Bubba's Restaurant. In Ashburn on Saturday, April 11, Calhoun Produce is holding its 12th Annual Easter Egg Hunt. There will be over 3000 candy-filled eggs for the kiddies, as well as farm animals, and wagon rides! Don't forget to bring your baskets! Hunts are at 11 AM and 12 PM. Ice cream, milk shakes, and sandwiches will also be available. This Weekend in Georgia

The AJC International Auto Show in Atlanta

Robert Osborne's Classic Film Festival in Athens

This four-day festival celebrates classic motion pictures through the screening of several newly

This Weekend in Georgia

We're fast approaching the second weekend in March! Here are some suggestions for exploring the great State of Georgia:

Celebrate Girl Scout Week at the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace
Through Saturday, March 14 in Savannah
Celebrate 97 years of Girl Scouting in the United States and the life of the Girl Scout Founder, Juliette Gordon Low, at her childhood home. Tour the Birthplace to learn about this famous American woman and the movement she started in Savannah, GA. Explore funny anecdotes, courageous and inspirational stories, and ideals of patriotism and character. Girl Scout cookies served. Juliette Gordon Low was an individual with hearing and mobility impairments. During Girl Scout week, in honor of all individuals with different abilities, admission will be FREE to all visitors in a wheel chair. From 10 am – 4 pm daily through Saturday, March 14. Cherokee Basket Making Workshop at the Chieftains Museum in Rome
Saturday, March 14 from 12 noon-4 PM

The Amazing Castle at Imagine It! The Children's Museum of Atlanta
Through May 26, 2009
The Amazing Castle transports children and adults to a magical place and time and celebrates the citizens who make a community special. Travel within this castle to a peaceful little community where, from entertaining to sewing, every citizen has an important job to do. Children join the fun as they dress up as knights, princesses, court jesters, and other workers needed to make this community thrive. This exhibit addresses core concepts in social studies, reading, and language arts. Students don costumes and role-play lords and ladies or castle villagers. Visitors can work in the Royal Workshops with “Trim the Tailor” or “Gable the Carpenter”. They pick vegetables in the garden, tote them to the Great Hall to cook up a royal meal and visit the tower to wake “Herald”, the sleeping dragon! The children will be engaged in helping each other solve problems and communicating through developmentally appropriate playful experiences about what it means to be a part of a community. This Weekend in Georgia

This weekend after you've cleared away the wrapping paper and consigned the turkey and dressing to the left-over bin of the refrigerator, plan a holiday trip to the Davenport House in Savannah, and their Holiday Evening Tours by Candlelight. The event features watching the house lit for the evening, short bread and cider in the garden, music of the early 19th Century, and lessons on the history of Christmas in the 19th Century Davenport House. For those of you on extended weekends for the holidays, there's no better way to celebrate the New Year than the annual Peach Drop at Underground Atlanta. Festivities begin at 11 AM on New Year's Eve, December 31, and include a moonwalk, basketball throw, and face painting. Live music will be featured as the year draws to a close, and at the stroke of midnight, watch the giant peach descend from the heights! Click here for a map to Underground Atlanta.



If you're looking for a different way to ring in the New Year, check out the New Year's Eve Fireworks from Tybee Pier, Tybee Island.
